14th JUNE 2011: One of the first ordained women priests in the Church of England, the Reverend Prebendary Philippa Boardman has this weekend been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2011 Honours List. Boardman’s MBE comes as a result of her ‘services to Heritage in East London’ where she has driven the restoration of the once-derelict Victorian parish of St Paul and St Mark, Old Ford and overseen its transformation into a vibrant community centre at the heart of the East End community.
Ordained in 1994 and appointed as Vicar of Old Ford parish in London’s East End in 1996, Reverend Boardman has become a much-respected and loved member of the East End community, rallying support from across her parish, the UK and the EU to transform the Old Ford into its current, celebrated restoration. A multi storey community resource building with a place of worship at its heart, St Pauls now boasts a community cafe, a gym and an educational support centre amongst its attractions. While St Pauls has received countless architectural and community awards in recognition of its transformative impact on the surrounding community, Boardman’s MBE is a fitting tribute to the woman behind its revival.
On receiving her award, Vicar of St Paul and St Mark, Old Ford Reverend Prebendary Philippa Boardman comments:
“I am delighted to receive this MBE award, not only personally but also on behalf of the many, many people who contribute to the vibrant life of St Pauls. In the resurrection of this building from its previous state of dereliction, we see heritage truly coming alive. And through its daily range of activities we see individual and community life being re-built. Our daily prayer is that every person coming into St Pauls, whether for a cup of tea in the cafe, for worship, for the Gym, for homework clubs, for youth activities or for a special event, will have a great experience of welcome and hospitality, reflecting the love and welcome of God in Jesus Christ for all people’.
